Six years ago, real estate broker Maggi Hall looked at a decaying neighborhood southeast of downtown DeLand and envisioned renovating the old houses to their former glory, restoring pride to the area. The DeLand Beacon "In defense of our constitutional rights" by Jessie Morland
As I read Affirmed: Teachers as Citizens by DeLand resident Maggi Smith Hall, I felt sad, drained and yet uplifted by this woman's true story of persecution. Yes, persecution of a 20-year highly respected teacher in South Carolina who dared to criticize certain expenditures by the school board in the district in which she was teaching. She even had the "audacity" to print her feelings in a letter to the local newspaper.

The DeLand Beacon "Write On" by Marge Clauser
Maggi Hall is well-known in West Volusia - as historian, preservationist, environmentalist, RealtorŪ and community leader. She is the recipient of numerous awards in each field to which she commits her time and energy. She is the author of four previous books. However, it is her latest book, Affirmed: Teachers as Citizens (iUniverse, 2006), that is her own personal story. The book chronicles the events, including harassment, intimidation and termination, that Hall endured as a teacher who questioned her school district's expenditure of funds.

Bargain Hunting, November 2005 "Success requires patience, willingness to renovate" by Joe Crews, Business Writer
Despite skyrocketing real estate prices, it's still possible to find a home for less than $100,000 in the Volusia-Flagler market - if you persevere and are patient, and are willing to repair and renovate it. Just ask Carla Gamble. She and her 42-year-old husband, Roy, this month moved into a two-bedroom, two-bath home north of DeLand they bought for $87,500.

American Bungalow, Fall 2005 "Architectural Revitalization in Action" by Maggi Hall, Broker/Owner West Volusia Properties
DeLand, incorporated in 1882, is located in Central Florida atop the worn ridges of the Appalachian Mountains. Although surrounded by numerous tourist destinations - Daytona Beach, NASCAR, Cape Kennedy, and Disney World - this charming community was a well-kept secret until recent times.
